Boating Safety
Posted on Mar 27th, 2024
The America’s Boating Club® in cooperation with FOLKS (Friends of Lake Keowee Society) is offering a Vessel Safety Checks for our community.  This is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th beginning at 10:00 a.m. FOLKS has provided a sign up sheet on their website which is listed below.  We are working with FOLKS and America’s Boating Club to arrange this, and I/Tina Bataska- PPN just spoke with the arrangers who said to register quickly so they can get a number of needed inspectors.   The inspectors will come to your dock to perform the inspection so it’s really convenient.  Additional details regarding the vessel inspections are given below the link for signing up.  This is a wonderful opportunity to make sure that your boat or personal water craft is safe so please take advantage of this.

America’s Boating Club® - Golden Corner Lakes thanks you for participating in Vessel Safety Checks (VSC’s) for your community.
VSC’s help you to “Boat Smart” and what could be more valuable?

Just what is a VSC?  It’s a free check of a vessel’s equipment for compliance with Federal, State and local safety requirements.  During the VSC, our certified vessel examiners have the opportunity to discuss with you the purpose of marine safety equipment, various State and local requirements, local boating conditions and answer any boating-related safety questions you may have.  Some of the items we check are:  proper display of numbers, registration/documentation, life vests, throwable devices, fire extinguishers, proper ventilation, sound producing devices, navigation lights, backfire flame control and overall vessel condition.  Vessels we inspect include power boats, jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards and other paddlecraft.

The results of a VSC are not reported to any law enforcement agencies.  If an examiner finds any items not in compliance with the VSC, you’ have the opportunity to correct them and schedule a brief reinspection.  When the examiner is satisfied that your vessel was compliant at the time of inspection, you’ll be given a sticker to affix to your vessel stating that the vessel has been checked for safety.

VSC’s help to reduce accidents and injuries by means of education  as to the value and use of marine safety equipment and other practices on the water.  It can help to prevent citations by meeting Federal, State and local safety equipment requirements and increase awareness of safety practices to avoid accidents and costly breakdowns.

If you have any questions or need further information, please call the Chairman of the Vessel Safety Committee, Mike Bladel, at cell phone number (563) 528-0355 or Sue Dragoo, Vessel Examiner, at cell phone number (630) 669-4481.
